How do you connect nodes?

Might seem like a dumb question but I have no clue how to connect nodes on Xbox.

They connect automatically once you invest in them. It's like a road for your workers to travel. They can only go to connected places. Have to also invest in part 2.of the nodes to unlock the items.too.
Cities are free and housing can be bought with your node points to lodge more workers then the 1 free bed you get in each town.

As stated, you will need to invest in the connecting nodes; Between the invested city and all those connecting in between.
If you are unsure which nodes are required to activate the one you are wanting, you can click "Previous Nodes" which will highlight all of the required nodes.
