I played PC BDO some. I enjoyed the combat. I enjoyed the life skills somewhat. But I soon realized I didn’t have much to do if I didn’t ‘keep up’ in PvP gear.
So, this is what you can do:
- Lifeskills, node management, work the marketplace, explore
- World bosses for end gear
- Grind, grind, grind...and grind pve mobs for $ so you can upgrade gear to compete in PvP
What I am missing?
Just for reference, I watched this and got a little concerned...

you could literally play 24/7 and still have things to do but you have to be self motivated in bdo. After you've completed the main quest line and black spirit quest line the game doesn't hold your hand telling you to do x then y then z
Speaking on the pvp part, I heard you'll have open world pvp at like 49 or something. Once you unlock it though is it permanent or can it be optional?

The video you referenced is a bit misleading.
First, its outdated.
2nd, I got lots of respect for GamingLighthouse but im not sure how knowledgeable he is or was at the time about Black desert.
So yeah, as mentioned, Lifeskills are a huge thing. Infact, every skill is a huge deal on its own.
Guilds and guild wars are a great content maker with scrolls, guild quests, node wars and seiges.
Bdx has a lot to offerd and id get more relevant references to get a better picture

You can flag up and attack anyone who's level 50 or above in non safe zones. If they're not flagged for pvp themselves you'll get a Karma penalty for killing a non combatant. If you want to avoid pvp don't grind in highly contested grind spots that drop rare items like Hexe. If your looking for pvp then grind in these spots, you'll most likely find it.

Sounds pretty interesting, thank you then for the information.
once we get the mediah patch there will be a lot more level 50+ grinding locations and it will become much easier to find good grind spots that aren't contested
Balenos, serendia, Calpheon. These are the areas we start with. It doesn't seem like much, but when you explore and start making those discoveries in the nooks and crannies of the map, it really makes the game that much more interesting.
Lifeskilling is great if you are into that sort of thing. It isn't just mindless chopping of trees or picking fruit. Lifeskilling is about setting goals for what you want crafted, or even just getting to that mastery level to have the symbol above your head, letting everyone know that you know what you are doing. The truly greatest lifeskillers in the game set goals and track down those specific materials they need. That is a journey in and of itself. Looking for gold? don't settle for lead, find that gold!
Fishing in one of the more boring activities for me, but I found myself fishing in many locations just to discover new fish to add to my knowledge basem thus increasing my energy pool and title acquisition. This game has a special feature where the more you discover, and the ore titles you acquire, the more bonuses you receive, whether it be extra luck or an extra percentage to finding items when gathering or grinding.
Grinding doesn't have to be monotonous and boring. You can party up with other people and set your party loot division. The best thing to do is set your items to special deals, which will automatically put any item (from the quality you designate and higher) on the marketplace. One of the best things in the world is opening your mailbox to millions of silver after a 2 hour grind with friends.
PvP is merciless in this game. If you aren't geared up, you will die. Open world PvP isn't mandatory until you reach level 50. At level 49, you get a black spirit quest to kill a giant catfishman on a small island in lake kaia. After completing this quest, you will have the ability to go to level 50 and beyond. A good thing to do if you don't want to pvp, but still want to reach max level is designate a lifeskill toon and a combat toon separate from eachother. This way, nobody can attack you while you are out picking your veggies or chopping pine trees to build a boat.
Near major towns, there is a small arena you can enter and automatically flag up. This is a practice pvp area. I don't go to these places much, but they are a safe place to test your skills or even hold guild events
I advise getting into a guild fast. If you do not think you are going to very strong in combat, it will be nice to have people that will have your back if people mess with you out in the world. I lost count of how many times my guildies have seen on the screen that I died, grouped up, and came to avenge me. Guilds aren't just for that, though. As you participate in guild quests, and just do things in the world, it increases your guild standing, which can increase your payouts in that guild of up to 5 million silver per day. I like to compete with my guildies for rank during guild quests. In pc, there is now a wages feature, where you get paid directly for your participation in a quest. You can collect these wages at anytime. they never disappear and keep stacking up, so it's like having a savings account.
There is just so much to do in this game. I've been playing since march 2016 and I still haven't done everything. It may be the completionism in me that makes me feel that way. Everything takes time and I advise that you simply take your time. There are other threads in this forum explaining why. Cheers.

Calm down there Chuckie. I asked a question and outlined what I knew. I never even said BDO has no end game content, so you either misread or became very defensive based on the normal arguments against BDO.
Lifeskills are a bundle of different things to do, but for what purpose other than producing a end product to try and sell or use. Normally lifeskills in other MMOs can complement your ability to have materials for crafting your own gear. Is that the case here?
And so far, all I see in the responses is ‘grinding mobs’ and pvp. Again the PvP is very one sided. If you don’t start from day one and try to keep up, there is no way a player who joins in a month or two will be able to compete. They will repeatly get crushed by players that ‘grinded’ and built up their pvp gear. This quickly will lead to new players leaving if they joined to pvp.
So, let’s say you do fall behind in PvP gear, but want tp PvP...you are left with accepting getting slaughtered or doing lifeskills. Right?

How is the video dated? It’s less than a year old and the version of BDO he is referring to is far AHEAD of what we will get on console. I think it’s a fair assessment of BDO and it’s ability to hold players.
And remember, console players have a different attention span, lots of gaming choices with less commitment.

But...that's nothing new, right?
I mean, I've played a lot of MMORPG and it's always the same. In PvP the overgeared wins. You can't expect to start playing in a day and pvp with players that's have been playing over a year or more, no matter the game.
So if you wanna be strong, play, otherwise you'll be weak. No matter when, no matter where. Simple as that.

No, not really. You have normalized pvp in many MMOs now. BGs that you can optionally join that put everyone on the same ‘level’ minus the perks your gear may give. ESO has it. WoW has it. It’s a smart move by developers to retain and gain new players.
So yea, no...other MMOs offer options.

Yes, you're right, but not everybody likes it.
Not everybody likes to farm like there no tomorrow, upgrade all your gear, and then when it comes to pvp, all are equal, even the new guy. For games likes this there's MOBAs.
The fun is just upgrade and become stronger. Not upgrade and be equal. No ones like to be equal, not in BDO.

These other MMOs have normailzed BGs as a option to the main PvP. I guess, for the longevity of a MMO...especially on console, giving new players a hope to succeed in pvp brings more players to the game.
It might be a hard sell to tell my friends in 6 months (who are currently busy with other games) to play BDX, yet warn them they will be so far behind in PvP because there are no normailized options in BDX.
Thanks for the well written, informational post.

That's only because your friends don't have the profile to play BDO.
The ones who really stay in BDO don't care about how much they die in PvP, they only keep grinding and grinding until they get better.
BDO is only a game and will never make everyone happy, so there's the ones who likes it and the ones who dislike.
Based on PC player base, I say there's a ton of players who likes BDO the way it is.
Other things to do in Black Desert. Furnish a home. Acquire antiquities for it. Create unique family members. Dress your family in unique combinations of cosmetic outfits. Dye the outfits uniquely. Acquire unusual mounts like the miniature elephant. Acquire extremely rare horses. Acquire player titles from the serious to the ridiculous. Walk through town. I think you can even create unique poses in the character creator but I didn't dive in to that. It's a beautiful game. I played it but not very far on PC. Loved it. Can't wait to explore it more deeply from a couch.
yea, Cookies, I'm actually surprised there isn't a grand furnishing addition in the ultimate preorder.
Everybody, when the game launches, by a bookshelf from the pearl shop. This will allow your characters that you are not using to gain knowledge for you. also buy a premium bed. with that, you can afk sleep to increase your energy gains. Instead of 1 energy restored every 3 minutes, it will be 3 every 3 minutes. that increases to 5 if you have a kamasylve blessing activated. that's 100 energy restored per hour for one character. 1 afk sleeping, all other characters reading a book makes for a pretty productive afk hour that results in a higher energy pool. Well worth the cash.

Open PvP starts at level 50 ?
Gear variety. Is there a lot of gear can obtain? Variety? All I read is that there is like 2 sets and you just keep upgrading them.
If you want to know what bdo holds for you check out you tube videos from a guy named king vox he makes it very clear.

Or I can just ask here. As i statedl, I played on PC, but I didnt understand why all the gear seemed the same. Basically get this one set and you are good til 56, then its just boss drops. That made advancing your character very shallow. One or two sets just covered with overpriced cosmetics from the pearl shop. Is this really the case?

It is the case because the core idea of the gearing in BDO is acquiring BiS boss and rare gear and upgrading it to PEN (+20).
The armor, in general, isn't spectacular because you get the "wow effect" from paid cosmetic items.
it is really a good idea to search through many guides on all things BDO. YouTube, blackdesertfoundry, dulfy etc.
Gear Summary:
Some gear in BDO has more crystal slots than others. Agerian armor has 1 slot per piece while Grunil has 2. Heve armor increases your max hp, while Hercules armor increase your carry weight. For weapons, Liverto(Blue) and Kzarka(Yellow) have the same ap, but kzarka does more damage vs enemies as a bonus.
All green gear can be upgraded via reform stones. A green piece of gear may give you +48 DP at TRI level. but that same piece of gear would give you +50DP and 54DP respectively as you reform them to blue and to yellow. Same thing with AP on weapons.
Gear diversity is a big thing. Your boss gear is pretty much your pvp gear. everything else, you equip based on the situations you are going to find yourselves in. Just grinding mobs and want to grind longer before turning your stuff in and melting useless gear? wear Hercules armor. Are you a level or two under the mobs you are going to face? wear heve armor for that extra HP.
The crystals you put into gear are important as well. Out exploring? Put some crystals in your shoes that let you jump higher or run faster.
There is also lifeskill equipment. Processing? you'll need craftsmen clothes to increase your chance of processing better items and increasing the exp you get from processing. Gathering? get some gathering clothes to increase gathering speed, exp. There are also accessories put into play here. While the Asula set increases your AP more than the treant set, you'll want the treant set for gathering because it increases your carry limit.
I could go on and on about the gear differences, but that would require an even greater wall of text. I hope you get the idea.
Thanks for the writeup. And thanks for not telling me to go watch X number of videos from PC players.
We are on a console forum for BDX players. Obviously players can research PC videos, as I have extensively, but to further the conversation and build a console community, it is worth asking here.
12 hours ago, Uberkull said:Gear variety. Is there a lot of gear can obtain? Variety? All I read is that there is like 2 sets and you just keep upgrading them.
Gear has little variety in Black Desert, you have options sure but it is not like ESO where you have many different sets to fill many different rolls. While yes I have a DP build, a AP build, and a Hybrid build, It all runs around a core set pieces of gear like armor it stays the same, few accessories may change (depending how tanky i need to be), and my offhand dagger may change, but that is it. I attached my most common build which is my wizards grinding build. If I'm killing monsters this is what I use no matter what. I will add this: While yes you can say you have choices, you do need to be careful. My mistake in my first year on PC was not setting goals, knowing what to get, or how to get it. Yes you may see many different opinions, and many, many different builds, but focus your time and money into Boss gear, be patient, it is going to suck, but the end results are worth it.
Wow, a picture is worth s 1000 words. Thanks.
Few questions if I may...
Do you main a Wizard?
And all your bound pets and pearl shop items are on the Wizard?
And why would you come to Xbox with all that investment on PC? Is it the comfy couch-controller in front of a 60” UHD TV?

Ranger is Level 62, and Wizard is 61 - I duel main them. One because I can't give up my Ranger, and two it makes my heavy life skilling more doable if I want to do a guild quest, or go grind and not have to come back half way across the world. ( I have played most every class to 56, but my highest are Ranger 62, Wiz 61, DK 61, Valk 60, Archer 60 (almost 61), Red alt Ranger at 59 (almost 60) )
Pets are Family bound, Some peal shop items are family, some are character. examples of character bound, Costumes, Weight, Inventory (for character), Horse flute. (this is one reason this is NOT a alt friendly game, because all are very important but either cost a lot of silver in game or real money)
Sure I have almost 24/7 up time on BDO since PC launch, sure I spent WAY more then I will ever want to admit, but I made a LOT of mistakes, not choosing a main early on, I was learning my way around the game. I wanted kinda of a fresh start, but I also want to help new players NOT make the same stupid mistakes, so they can progress better. So Im just going to just AFK on the PC version (just keeping current, keeping workers going, and keep my lifeksills moving) but focusing all my efforts into BDX, to show with the right knowledge how far you can go. I'll be sharing the journey on Twitch.
