Do I have the worst luck ever, or is it common to only get 10 fish from auto fishing before I get DC'd, or get nudged by a player boat and my character stops fishing? Turn off player collision while afk fishing is active, at least in a safe zone. I keep leaving my console on to try and progress and come back and nothing happened. I didn't buy inventory space and upgrade a fishing rod to catch 10 fish at a time. I haven't had a single good afk fishing session. I really like the game, but I feel like it barely works.

I mainly do processing ago but the one time I did do fishing I found myself nowhere near where I left my character even though I was in a safe zone so you might be right
