Ok so if your in the game for combat you can just play to your hearts content. Combat is fun, way more in this game than any MMO I have played.
But If you want to do the life skills stuff you better get used to twiddling thumbs.
Each life skill activity, be it gathering water in jars or skinning an animal uses 1 energy, you get a limit on max energy... which goes up randomly ...really I thought knowledge gained increased it but thats not a certainty lol.
my max is 45, and i noticed it wasnt going up very fast, so I did some tests:
standing still/ sitting / in town or out in the sticks it goes up by 1 every 3 minutes (roughly...seemed to be 3 minutes 10 seconds sometimes) = Time sat about twiddling thumbs 135 minutes (2 hours 15 minutes)
laying in bed says energy is increasing, seems to be 1 per minute and a half (only just got the bed but lets round that down to 1 minute to be on the safe side, certainly wasnt faster than that) = time sat twiddling thumbs 45 minutes
Logged out it charcters seem to gain it at 1 an hour! no joke it takes an hour! = time doing other stuff while you wait 2700 minutes (45 hours! nearly 2 days!)
Now on pc that may not be such an issue, just alt tab load up netflix. On console its not so good.
Sugestion: The last logged in character gains energy aat 1 per 3 minutes when logged out. 1 energy per minute when logged in and 1 per 10 seconds when sleeping in a bed logged in. perhaps even a boost to logged out characters who are sleeping when you log them out?
There is a specific way to increase energy. If you look at your knowledge section on the start menu you can see lists of people of such 0/2. Talking to these people once updates the ??? And you get 1 to 2 energy from completion if each section.
So talk to every one. The ? On map once.
This cap extends to alts.
Also some quest reward energy too. I empty what I have before my dailies and in 10 minutes I gain like 30 energy.
I think 1 per hour offline is low, I made 5 alts who are banking energy for future use. 3 or 4 would feel fair.
You can bust energy gain up to 5 /3min later(Villabuff + kamasilvia blessing) yet up to 3/3min with kamasilvia blessing. And you can go beyound energy max cap with energy crystalls and some food on toons
This is why energy is important and having alts helps. Currently i have 7 characters a d my max energy is 146(still working on it) that gives me plenty to work with actively and i just rest in a bed with kama blessing for 5 every 3 minutes on my main.
And your "each life skill activity uses energy is false" only gathering from what ive seen.
Production. No. Fishing. No. Cooking. No. Alchemy. No training. No. Trading. No. Sailing. No. I havent done farming it hunting but im gonna say no

You guys are using terms I just dont get, what is karma blessing? What is villabuff? I did not get a chance to play in beta or play the first week. Chances are a lot of people reading this will be just as confused.
Please I am grateful you have taken the time to reply and help but please explain what you mean.

Fishing: seems to be the oddball, it's soo slow fishing quests have been dull as hell. It seems to be geared fully at doing it afk....leaving an xbox on all night under load is a bad idea. Drastically shorten the devices life.
The other skills all require gathering and energy use to set up.....ok a network of workers can get some cooking ingredients...again only if your online.
Energy use in this game is a nightmare.

Useful info thank you, had planned to explore at my own pace but seems the game may need me to explore faster, planned around the map earlier and it's a decent size. Knowing the map is due to grow too is awesome.

Blessing of Kama is a pearl shop item(also on market) that increases your natural energy gain by +2. Villabuff isnt in game yet so dont worry.
Fishing has multiple factors. Your fishing level as well as where u fish depend on how quick u hook a fish then either wait or play the mini game. Places u fish have varying levels of fish. Some areas are dried up(**** waiting time), some are average, some are abundant (much faster). Alot depends on how many people are there and how often it gets fished.
For workers. The basic thing I tell people is to start with the 3 potato nodes right outside velia. Potatoes are the only gathered item needed for beer(which is needed to feed workers). Once u got passive potatoes coming in while u play u end the night making beer. Beer feeds for workers to keep going amd any excess u can sell for profit to buy more items until your energy is up.
Back to energy. Its entirely based on knowledge. Open your knowledge menu and u will see sections like character, topography, acedemics etc. Inside these are sub section and even more sub sections each one has the energy symbol then 0/2, 0/3, 0/4. When u open it u see alot if ???????. Once u find that knowledge it gets filled in. As u fill sections u are awarded energy.
If u got any more questions let me know

Thank you very helpful.
Though with workers I have been feeding them grilled bird meat
2 chicken meat / 6 deep fat oil / 1 salt / 2 cooking wine.
It does +3 stamina where beer is +2.... no idea if the extra plus makes that much difference though

It's really rough starting out. My first time playing bdo and on xbox so energy is a pain while gathering etc. It will take some time and people here have some good suggestions and pointers.

true, though pearl shop items mentioned above is not a good suggestion. microtransactions in games should really only be cosmetic, BDO seems to be full of major boosts for stupidly high prices
My max energy is now 80, though it is very rare that I have that much as it generates so slowly. Think you would need to leave the game on non stop all day to get the most of the energy system (at the cost of your xbox and electricity bill lol)
1 hour ago, TheDaveStream said:microtransactions in games should really only be cosmetic, BDO seems to be full of major boosts for stupidly high prices
I agree and disagree. I agree they should only be cosmetic if u cant sell them, but the fact that most things can be put on the market benefits players who dont spend money.
As for stupid high prices, ehats the most expensive thing? Costumes sell for 30m? U can make 100m in a few hours without much effort. Just be thankful the market prices are not entirely player determined or the prices would be crazy
I would take a full day and just focus on knowledge from NPCs.
Easiest thing is to unlock all the worker nodes. Pick one you dont have and hit previous node. Run to the marker you don't have. You can map out the entire world this way. If you dont see the npc you can select the discovered node and hit waypoint, that will show you where the guy is.
While you head this way talk to all the people with a ? On The map. This will get you almost 200 energy cap in a day.
You get plus 1 energy cap and energy for this adds up plus cap let's you bank it on alts longer.

It's taken me 2 weeks to get to 8 million lol though getting ingame currency is not my goal, just having fun playing is my goal. But I was speaking of the pearl price. I stocked up my Pearl's to buy a 16 slot upgrade for characters...turns out it was only one character it upgraded!
I did look through the central market for value packs and inventory upgrades...none but the market is not exactly straight forward.

As I say I now have the cap at 80 but that's not the issue, it's how long it take to charge.
1 energy every 3 minutes when logged in ..... that's 4 hours to fully charge!
1 energy every minute if asleep in a bed.... thats 1 hour 20 of sitting watching my character sleep
Offline...1 energy an hour!!! 3 days 8 hours!
A few times I have left my console on simply to recharge my energy, not ideal or advisable.
Thats why alt are useful as they all share your energy cap but have their own energy pool
Every time your pool goes up you go from 10/80 to 11/81.
It's a free energy and at 20 an hour online you can leave it on at work or asleep with TV off and be full in 4 hours, or have 180 cap and have 170 when you wake up.

Xboxs are not designed to run under load 24/7.
They are designed to be ok if on and at the dashboard 24/7 but that's massively different to running a game.
On the PC you would alt tab and set the CPU priority to low. You cant do that on an xbox.
This is a big issue the developers need to address. Personally I dont want to use a ton of electricity and shorten the life of my console because the energy regen needed for aspects of a game is set too low lol

I had been thinking about this as well. Although I love the game, I think allowing the sale of pearl shop items is wrong. People who have lined pockets in rl make millions instantly while the average person just make ends meet each month. Focusing on being a game for all gamer types rich or poor would be a better thing, and making crafted cosmetics more profitable on the market. I feel all pearl shop items should just be family bound, but that's just my opinion.

You need to realize we use to have things similar to that, its called a subscription based game without much of a cash shop. This allows developers constantly monthly income to improve their game. People started moving away from that and toward free game cause...well its free. But free games need income to survive. Elder scrolls online, $10 just like bdo, but they charge per dlc, per chapter, per everything. $60 for a chapter that is 1/10 of the game u paid $10 for. Black desert is $10 flat out. Future content is free. Sadly in a game like this they rely in "whales" to fund the game so it can be free for the rest of us. The pearl shop has no p2w items, just pay for convienance. The rest of us can get items from the market, which again is thankfully not completely price decided by players.
Just my thoughts after nearly 20 years of online gaming

The good thing about Eso though is you can go subscription based for 15 bucks a month with access to all dlc and unlimited craft bag plus 1500 crowns a month. Also, all inventory space is available to purchase in game with ingame currency. Nothing in crown store is ptw. I would love a feature like this in bdo and buy cosmetic stuff periodically to support the game, but sadly they make more money nickle and dimeing you to death for everything and doubt they would ever have subscription.

All dlc, but not chapters even though subscription origionally said "all future content" so they "invented" Chapters so they could still charge
